Three days after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) directed MCG to submit an action-taken report on the leachate management by February 10, the civic body on Monday decided to empanel multiple agencies for clearing it from Badhwari landfill. These agencies will be responsible to transport leachate produced at Bandhwari to the sewage treatment plants (STPs), ensuring it does not flow into the surrounding areas of the landfill.
“We have already floated a tender to hire multiple agencies so that leachate can be transported from the landfill site daily to the STPs. Once we empanel agencies, we are going to ensure that 50 trips are at least made every day from the landfill to STPs so that leachate does not flow out of the plant at any cost. We earlier had hired one agency but now we want to empanel multiple agencies for the effective management of leachate,” said an MCG official. MCG commissioner Narhari Singh Banger had recently directed the private agencies engaged in bioremediation and biomining of legacy waste at Bandhwari to ensure leachate treatment at the site. The agencies were also told to utilise the leachate treatment facility available at the site for the purpose, ensuring that leachate does not flow to the Aravalis.
The MCG officials said that around 400 kiloliters per day (KLD) of leachate is generated at Bandhwari. The civic body recently submitted to the NGT that fresh leachate is treated at the two disk tube and reverse osmosis (DTROs) of the landfill site, each having a capacity of 200 KLD. There is another 150 KLD leachate treatment plant at the landfill site, said the officials. The civic body has also submitted to the NGT that 400 KLD of leachate is being disposed of in a STP at Behrampur. The NGT recently directed MCG to test the groundwater contamination and health conditions of villagers in five villages surrounding Bandhwari by February 10. The tribunal has asked MCG to constitute a team with representatives of Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) to check contamination and health conditions of villagers in Bandhwari, Baliawas, Balola, Gwalpahari and Dera Mandi.
